Barry Peng: Owning it

Since becoming a V.I.P. Commercial Cleaning franchisee in 2010, Barry Peng’s
business is booming.

It’s a long way from his days as a chef in a noodle bar, followed by a short stint in
accounting.

As well as his wife, who sometimes helps on jobs and with the paperwork, Barry and his
team of seven have started taking on more specialist commercial cleaning work – like
carpets, windows and hard floors.

“We’re getting bigger and bigger, as well as more efficient at taking on bigger jobs,”
Barry says.

Barry certainly works hard, but nothing beats the freedom to choose his own hours.

“Sometimes I work from midnight, sometimes I get up at five in the morning. It doesn’t
matter, because I enjoy it.”

“I have my own lifestyle, my own customers, my own team and my own cash flow. I also
make my own decisions. It’s all my own,” Barry says with a smile.

And because it’s his own, he can choose to spend more time with his family, and go
hiking or swimming.

Barry also enjoys the opportunity to keep learning and know cleaning inside out. And he
advises people who are thinking of starting a commercial cleaning business to do the
same:

“Customers don’t just want a clean. They want advice on how to make their workplace
safer, cleaner and more efficient,” Barry says.

“We learn a lot from our customers.”
