How To Stay Healthy Through The Flu Season

09 Jun 20

With flu season looming, cross contamination and your cleaning routines are really important. This year of course, they’re more important than ever, because of COVID-19. And just because restrictions are now being eased, doesn’t mean we can relax. The virus is still around. We still need to take extra care to protect ourselves, our families and our co-workers.

Don’t go to work when you’re sick
Don’t be a hero, this just creates a domino effect where sick people infect others whilst at work or travelling to and from work. If you do get sick, how do you know if it’s the flu of COVID-19? You don’t. Play it safe and get tested.

Regular hand washing is still important
You’d be surprised how many people don’t wash their hands often enough or thoroughly enough, and although our hand-washing practices have probably improved because of COVID-19, it’s always good to get a reminder of the times that it’s extra important to wash your hands:

  • After using the toilet.
  • Before and after food preparation.
  • Before eating food.
  • After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Before and after treating an open wound, cut or abrasion.
  • After changing a baby’s nappy or cleaning up after a child who has used the toilet.
  • After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste.
  • After handling pet food, pet treats or pet toys.
  • After touching a rubbish bin.

How to wash your hands efficiently
It’s amazing how much a simple act such as washing your hands properly will do to reduce the spread of disease-causing germs:

  • Wet your hands with clean, running water, and apply soap.
  • Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails.
  • Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds (sing ‘Happy Birthday’ song through twice!)
  • Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
  • Dry your hands using a clean towel, paper towel or air-dryer.
